Labor rate for tire replacement?

Post by core-rider » Fri Mar 22, 2019 11:13 am

Is $20 per when really the going labor rate now!?! Dropped off my 3 15" trailer wheels to have them replace the tires... Brought my own tires... $20 each to remove, replace, and balance each wheel... and another $6 each for new high pressure valve stems... They don't even have to remove/install the wheels from the trailer as I'm doing that!
Reminds me why I do as much of my own maintenance as possible!

Wilson charges less than that IIRC.

I used a place close to my house for convince... Just had a bit of sticker shock for labor. I could understand if they had to do all the work and it was expensive wheels/tires that were hard to install, but this was about as easy as it gets. Oh well, job is done so guess I'll stop whining.

Nah dude it fucking sucks I am with you. The going rate is now $20-25 a tire. That's why I take my stuff to Jesse.

Walmart used to charge $5 to swap a tire and that was just a couple years ago. Now they charge $10. That is without a balance though. I haven't gotten tires balanced in a while and I definitely wouldn't on a trailer.

I had a set mounted and balanced by college tire last year and it was up to $100. Shits crazy though I know the machines aren’t cheap.

The reason it's $20-25 each now is everyone buys there own tires so the tire store has to pay for a $6k machine somehow..... I do tires and I charge $15 to replace tire and $10 to balance.... you have to think a wheel weights are very expensive and you have to stick several different types.. .. my tire machines were $5k so I can't afford to do them for free... another thing is my shop needs to make about $60 per hour to make it happily... I'm a small shop so a larger one will be scaled up

Yep prices have gotten insane on mounting and balancing tires. When I lived in Huntsville I did them myself on post.

$20 mounted and balanced per tire is actually a deal at this point.

Quick Lane at Woody is $25 for drive in service with customer supplied loose tires. Was supposed to get new valve stems for that price but they forgot.

$25 bucks and no valve stems? Fuck me running.

Funny side note. My dad is that old man that will argue with the tech and tell them not to swap valve stems cause “ain’t nothing wrong with em” whether it changes price or not. I’ve had too many leak or fail on me on shitboxes to run that risk.

I paid $45 I think for my manual tire machine. It paid for itself at this point. I’ll pay on a truck or car. But any quad, mower, trailer gets fixed in a few minutes for free.
